Dear Friend,
As you probably know, I have publicly announced my decision to seek re-election as your mayor. When I was first elected nearly four years ago, the city was in the grip of inflexible and uncompromising thinking. During the time I have been privileged to serve as your mayor, I have worked toward resolving our differences, with the result that agreement has been reached with nearly all of our city employees and the city has succeeded in balancing a shrinking general fund budget. For the first time in several years, our financial situation is stable and no further layoffs or reduction in service is forecast for the coming fiscal year.
While still facing serious challenges, we have come a long way in the past four years. Although our neighboring cities are struggling with continued layoffs and reduction in public services, Vallejo has achieved a relative level of stability and will be out of bankruptcy within months. While crime, graffiti and public safety continue to present a problem, the City Council and I have met the challenge with new and creative ways of addressing these age-old problems. In addition, we have focused on meeting the need for improved services for our youth and senior citizens. In our time of crisis, private citizens have volunteered their time and energy to help rebuild our city, attract new businesses and jobs, enhance public safety and promote quality of life programs for our people. All of these efforts have received my active support and encouragement.
Exciting new development has been proposed for Mare Island, the Solano County Fairgrounds and our waterfront. If privileged to serve as your mayor for another four years, I pledge to continue my efforts to support the creation of new businesses and jobs and continue to work with the City Council and my fellow citizens to assure a sustained economic recovery for our city.
