Accomplishments Thus Far

Minimize

In the past three (3) years many accomplishments have occurred in our city.  Some of those accomplishments are:

  • The creation of Foreclosure Workshops to increase the likelihood that Vallejo citizens can keep their homes during these harsh economic times. I have worked closely with Wells Fargo Bank in making every effort to insure that Vallejoans have every opportunity to save their homes; the commencement of regular meetings with the Superintendent of schools is a continuing effort to promote safe school environments for our students;
  • I have also successfully lobbied in Sacramento for an exemption for the city of Vallejo from state budget cuts;
  • Established the 360 Committee and working with council member Gomes in partnership with Solano County, created a vision to develop the Solano County Fairgrounds into an iconic destination which will bring much needed revenue to our city and provide commercial, retail and recreational opportunities; consolidation of the Vallejo and Benicia transit systems to provide more efficient transit service, improve our ability to be successful in applying for transit funding and reduce the cost of providing said service;
  • My office worked very closely with Allied Defense Recycling to obtain the necessary permits for opening the Mare Island dry docks and for obtaining the bids to recycle its first two ships, thus creating at least 120 new jobs on Mare Island;
  • Perhaps most significant of all accomplishments is that we have set in place policies, practices, and procedures to establish financial stability for years to come; thereby cancelling out millions of dollars of inherited deficits.
  • In addition to the above I have worked with a number of community volunteers to re establish the Mayors Cup golf tournament which is a fund raiser for after school youth activities, senior citizen activities and preschool reading program through the Solano County Library (raised on the average of $40,000.00 per year).

In addition to the accomplishments we have seen our share of difficult times, to be sure.  For example, our city continues to face numerous challenges such as crime and the overall lack of civic pride and morale. I have joined with Council member Gomes in creating The Mayor’s Task Force on Prostitution in order to address the growing prostitution problem in Vallejo.  I have also worked with staff and coordinated collaborative efforts between our city, GVRD, VCUSD, and VSFCD to look at ways to more effectively and efficiently provide services to our citizens.

Vallejo’s situation is not unique.  The economic landscape of our city, our state, our country, and yes, even our world, is bleak, to say the least.  But, in the words of an old saying, “Behind every dark cloud, there is a silver lining.”  In other words, “Things will get better!” I am happy to report that we are now operating with a budget that is balanced throughout the next five (5) years!  That is something to celebrate, don’t you agree?
